Morning Drive

The driver of the van raised his arms in frustration as he tried to explain to the police why he didn’t see that person he’d just hit.

She didn’t say anything

He pointed to the construction, to the steam, the cop wrote everything down and pointed to the squad car

She didn’t say anything when she realized she’d been pushed

She hit the ground hard while she contemplated missing class

She saw the fender and thought of dad

She didn’t say anything while she was loaded into the ambulance

she thought of the boy who sits next to her in class

Traffic started to move again, as we watched

thoughtful knowing
